Minutes of the October 2009 Meeting

Lake Toxaway Estates Painters Guild Oct. 15, 2009 meeting

This was an evaluation meeting.

Statement of purpose: For the LTEPG to provide members with access to workshops, art appreciation, field trips, demos and a means of exhibiting and selling their work. Also to promote art and the goodwill among artists in LTE.

Treasures report:
Number of members paid, 30. Next year we will be charged, $25.00, for the use of the church. The new screens for the art show cost $436.35. Dues for 2010 Season are $20.00, due May 1st. Please send to; Donna Parker 1631 Cold Mtn Rd. 28747

Accomplishments this year:
2 workshops
Pastel with Elsie Dresch and Oil with Sarah Sneeden
Field trip to Carolina Fine Arts School and Ben Long studio in Asheville.
Demonstrations by: Leo Termin, Dick Dellalonga, Phil Garrett, and Sue Fazio.
Art Show: 34 artists participating, last year 25 artists.

New Business:
Judy Termin is the nominating chairman and in the infancy of the group, she asked me to remain as Pres. for another year. She asked Jim Hefley to be VP. The VP will act as Program Chair. Maura Termin volunteered
to do PR. She will issue a press release to the newspaper concerning our Art Show and possibly get a photographer to cover the show.

Evaluation:
Future ideas for what you would like for programs:
WC demo, framing demo, Karen Phillips to do a program on making cards with photos of our paintings.

Workshops:
Acrylic with Phil Garrett for 3 days
Elsie pastel. July??
Oil…

Art Show Evaluation:

We discussed layout of the room and the possibility for having food stations.
Have photographers have their own show, include with this giclees and digital photograph.
We are fortunate that LTCC lets us use the room free, bring our own food and wine with no rental fee.
Reminder all work must be framed to be included in show.
Would like to have a central desk for sales with list of buyers of each painting.
Also more advertising of 15% to Lake Toxaway Charities.

Questions

Should we have refreshments at the meetings? No
A social event just for artists?
Sue Fazio suggested we have artists bring a painting to be critiqued at each meeting.
Any interest in Plein Air outings to Dupont forest or other similar off campus sites? People would like the first Thurs. of the month to be a paint out.

Laura Fountain has talked with Chris regarding a show on July 12th for artists that have a large body of work.

PR chairman needs to notify the Lake Toxaway Community Association about posting our programs on their calendar and to invite all who are interested, including those that are not necessarily artists.

Next meeting is May 20, 2010.

October Meeting

Our September meeting was a great success. Phil Garrett a Golden artist gave a 2 hour demonstration on the many products from Golden Paints. The demonstration was very well attended.

Notes from August Meeting

The Sara Sneedan and Elsie Dresch workshops were well attended. Much was learned in both workshops.

The Appalachian Pastel Society meets in Black Mountain on October 2nd. See Art Organizations links for further information.

The Bascom current exhibition is Southern Landscapes by Lamar Dodd and Will Henri.

Our Art Show is October 5, 2009. The show is open to all members. Let me know if you need an application.

We will have computer printed artist names tags available for our show.

Our next meeting will be Friday September 18 at 9:30 am at the Methodist Church. Artist Phil Garrett will give a painting demonstration. See artists links for further information.

Michele Miller gave an informative lectures on the making of gicless and on how giclees can expand the profits from the original artwork.

Meet at the Country Club parking lot at 10am. Arrive at school 11:30am. Mandy will give us a tour of the school and we will speak with the director about weeklong courses. Lunch 1:15 at 12 Bones followed by a visit to Ben Long’s Gallery. Ben is a very accomplished artist. His link is on our blog.

Those at the meeting expressed a great interest in having local artists do painting demonstrations at our meetings.

Painting Group – For those who would like to be part of a painting group, we will meet every 2 weeks. On June 4th we will meet promptly at 9:30 am in the club parking lot and go to Meadow Ridge to paint. Each time we could paint at a different place.

Publicity – The group would like to see an article in the LTCA newsletter about our group that includes galleries our artists show at.

Information – How to learn of what is happening in our area regarding art shows, workshops and gallery opportunities? Our ltpainters blog has links to local art organizations web sites; such is Fine Arts League of the Carolinas, Henderson and Tranzyvania Art Leagues and The Bascom in Highlands. We can also subscribe to their email newsletters. On our blog there is posted links to artist web sites. If you have a web site let me know and I will post your link.

Field Trips – There was an interest in having field trips to special showings and such. Mandy Kejllstrom would like for a group to come over to the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas for lunch and tour. Several are very interested and I will pursue this with Mandy and keep you informed.

Volunteering – Sue Fazio spoke about the ongoing summer programs at the Brevard Boys and Girls Club. We have an opportunity to volunteer as a group or individuals to assist, or to teach art classes. Those interested let me know.

Our Art Show is October 5th.

Leo Termin gave an extremely interesting talk on perspective in both painting and seeing. Thank you Leo.

Sara Sneeden Workshop

Artist Sarah Sneeden will be conducting a oil workshop for us on July 29th, 30th, 31st.

Sarah Sneeden
Sarah has been a North Carolina resident since 1967 and is a native of Pennsylvania. She began her career in art 40 years ago. She graduated from Centenary College in New Jersey, the Famous Artists School, the New York Institute of Photography, and the Portrait Institute of New York. Sarah is an associate member of Oil Painters of America. Locally she has won numerous Best of Show awards, with paintings in private and corporate collections nationally. She is a well-known art workshop instructor. She was awarded the Grumbacher Gold Medallion for excellence in the ’99 Pen Women Show. Her published book, Treasures of the Forest, original oil paintings of DuPont State Forest’s beautiful waterfalls, trails, and towering pines, is a collection of paintings that exemplifies Sarah’s favorite way of working which is en plein air – working out-of-doors on location in sunny spots, for instance, where she can study firsthand the play of light on her subject.

Dear PSA Members, Claudia Seymour, PSA Signature member and President of the Salmagundi Club, NYC, has announced that Mrs. Flora B. Giffuni, founder of the Pastel Society of America, advisor in the founding of over thirty pastel societies, and patron of the Flora B. Giffuni Gallery for Pastels at the Butler Institute for American Art, will receive the Salmagundi Medal of Honor at the club’s President’s Dinner on April 23rd. This is the highest honor the 138 year-old artists’ club bestows upon an artist. Rae Smith, President of PSA, Jimmy Wright, PSA treasurer and O. Aldon James, President of The National Arts Club, will give tribute to Flora at the dinner. Salmagundi President Claudia Seymour will present the Medal on behalf of the club’s Board of Directors and membership. Flora is the person who introduced pastel to contemporary America. Artists, collectors, art material manufacturers, and publishers owe her a debt of gratitude for her non-wavering enthusiasm and generosity to the pastel community. This year will mark a milestone birthday for Flora. Though you may never have met Flora Giffuni, and if you are so moved, you can write her a note of congratulations on receiving this honor, care of the Pastel Society of America, 15 Gramercy Park South, New York, NY 10003. Summer Guild Events


LAKE TOXAWAY ESTATES PAINTERS GUILD
Inaugural Meeting
May 21, 2009

Methodist Church

Leo Termin will talk on “Perspective in Painting.”

This brand new guild will meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month from May through October. Annual dues of $20.00 will be collected. The dues will cover speaker’s fees, transportation and judges for shows.

The guild is sponsoring a plein air oil painting workshop by Eric Speyer, June 10,11, 12. Those interested email Judy Termin, terminl@bellsouth.net

A pastel workshop, given by Elsie Dresch will be offered later in the summer.

Our hope is that our Guild will provide members with access to workshops, art appreciation, field trips, demonstrations and a means for exhibiting and selling their work, also to promote art and good will among artists in the Lake Toxaway Estates.

Hope you all will attend this exciting first meeting. We need everyone’s input to make our Guild successful. Minutes of the organizational meeting are also attached.
