October 21st Meeting Notes

Bette Coningsby started the meeting by reading our Statement of Purpose.

Treasurer's Report. Maura reported a balance of $827.47.

Bette suggested we spend some money on covers for our art show screens. We have 23 screens, thanks to a donation of 9 screens by Cathy C. 14 screens need covers. It was voted and approved to have Stephanie buy material and make the screens if she can do this for less than $45 each, which is the price they can be purchased commercially, about $700. We would pay her for material and labor.

Publicity - Karen read MJ's report. MJ sent information and photos to the Transylvania Times Editor. She asked him to let her know when the article will run. MJ will get PR started next year by having Connie at the LTCA office include us in email blasts. MJ is stepping down as the PR Chair and we need a replacement.

Bette gave a month to month summary of our year:

When I receive your application and check, or if you have already sent in your application and check, you will receive a confirmation by email (or mail).

Possible Watercolor and Pastel workshops are being considered and information will be emailed to you (and available at meetings) as soon as they are finalized.

******************************************
IMPORTANT:
We are considering a local 3-day Watercolor Workshop with James Scott Morrison, but some have questioned whether there would be enough interest because of the fact that he already teaches many classes in the area. We would need about 8 to 10 students and have 3 or 4 "YES" from his non-ALHC student list. This survey is to determine possible interested ALHC members in taking a 3-day workshop from Jim, probably late September or early October, 2010. If you would be interested please reply to this email with "YES JIM" or "NO JIM" in the subject line.

A pastel workshop is being considered with well-known British pastel artist and workshop instructor Barry Watkin. You may see his website at http://www.barrywatkin.co.uk/ I would appreciate any comments you pastel artists may have.

If you have any questions, or a problem printing out the application form, please contact me.

This workshop will cover getting oil-like effects using acrylic paints, mediums and gels including the new OPEN acrylic paints . These paints have an extended working time that can give painters much more control of blending and overall manipulation to achieve wonderful controlled effects. They can also be used in combination with existing heavy body and fluid acrylics and their mediums, gels and additives . This gives painters a truly comprehensive system of paints .

DAY ONE : In this workshop you will learn the best way to prepare supports ( canvas, linen ,wood panel etc. ) to get the most from acrylic painting . Phil will cover heavy body, OPEN and fluid acrylics and their uses and the use of acrylic gels to create surface texture and alter consistency and to extend and economize. You will learn which pigments provide clean color mixing and a basic palette for traditional techniques and which mediums to add for blending and glazing .

DAY TWO & THREE : On a prepared support ( canvas or panel ) . We will work from a still life set-up under paint, over paint, blend and glaze. The last part of DAY THREE: we will discuss how to correctly varnish the completed painting. Along the way we will cover lots of solid technique and have great time painting as well.

Students need to bring synthetic brushes suitable for thicker paint applications (bristle type,) softer brushes for blending and glazing , water container, roll of paper towels, 2 prepared canvas or wood panels 16 by 20 inches, # 2 pencil and a notebook.
